SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Kathy Mark
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Kathy Mark. \n~~~~~ \nThere hasn’t been a time when music wasn’t a part of singer/songwriter Kathy Mark’s life.  As Polish heritage would dictate\, her first musical instrument was an accordion\, which weighed almost as much as she did!  By age 13\, Kathy was borrowing guitars from friends who had lost interest in their own music lessons and was teaching herself guitar basics. \nAn amateur luthier for 25 years\, Kathy is now focusing on “polishing” her music and “building” a rapport with musicians\, and music lovers\, by playing her own instruments and those of fellow boutique guitar builders. \nKathy is a long time student of international finger-style guitar champion\, Helen Avakian. She has also been influenced by the musical style of Nanci Griffith\, as well as Sungha Jung\, Sara Barielles\, and the blues legend\, Keb’ Mo’. \nThe wonder and awe of guitar never grows old: six strings with infinite possibilities! \n~~~~~\n\nOpen mic performances will be available to all.\nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors).  Signup begins at 6:30pm and open mic begins at 7:00.  The featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nThe Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern is located in the Town of New Windsor at 9 Vance Road\, Rock Tavern\, NY\, off Route 207\, 3.4 miles west of Rte 300; or take I-84 to Exit 5A\, Rte 747 south to Rte 207\, make a right and take the second left. \nFor more information contact the President of the Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at HVFGRockTavern@hudsonvalleyfolkguild.org.

SUMMARY:Poughkeepsie Chapter: Scott Lichtenstein
DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\nwill host our monthly coffeehouse on\nSaturday\, December 21\, 2024\nat the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Poughkeepsie\, N.Y.\nThis month we are proud to be featuring Scott Lichtenstein.\n  \nScott Lichtenstein has always been extremely passionate about music. He gained musical knowledge from both of his parents who were both musically talented. His father played piano and guitar and his mother also played piano and was professionally trained as a vocalist.  Music was a huge part of the family. Throughout elementary school\, Scott would sing in chorus and learn to play trombone. His first solo experience was when he was in 5th grade where he was given the opportunity to perform in a talent show where he sang Hound Dog by Elvis Presley. \nHe continued his musical experiences singing in chorus in high school.  He performed in a show called Ossining Live and sang Somebody to Love by Queen. After doing chorus in his freshman year of high school\, he had many more opportunities to sing in a music class called Gimme the Mic. His music teacher\, Ms. Kafer recognized his talent and gave him the opportunity to have his own concert. He sang with his chorus group at the town tree lighting\, high school graduation and performed as a soloist at  the Village Fair. \nAfter high school he moved to Florida where he continued his musical experiences in college and joined Voices of Valencia.  A few years later\, he moved back to the Hudson Valley area and has had many opportunities to sing at  Open Mic engagements at various locations including Paula’s Café\, The Adriance Memorial Library\, and the Unitarian Fellowship Church. He had been looking around the area for more singing opportunities for adults that was inclusive and found the Mid-Hudson IBM Chorus which he is a current member. This group has increased his musical knowledge and repertoire and has given him the spark in his life and he feels that he has accomplished this goal. Last spring\, he was selected to do a solo of Giants in the Sky from the Broadway musical Into the Woods.  The accompanist chose this song for him because she felt he could express himself and show his singing skills. Singing makes him calm and he loves performing on stage. \n  \n\nOPEN MIC\n \nOpen mic performances will be available for all.\nSignup begins at 6:30 and open mic begins at 7:00.\nThe featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors). \nQuestions? Contact the President of the Poughkeepsie Chapter\, John Hamilton\, at birdman566@aol.com.
