SUMMARY:Poughkeepsie Chapter: Eric Lee
DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Eric Lee in our monthly Open Mic on Saturday\, January16\, 2021 at 7:30pm. \n\n\nA masterful and engaging multi-instrumentalist and songwriter\, Eric Lee combines poetic lyrics with a singular melodic sense that are strongly rooted in the folk and bluegrass traditions. For being still in his twenties\, he has achieved experience beyond his years\, drawing from years accompanying such notable artists that include Eric Andersen\, Peter Rowan\, and The Kennedy’s. As a member of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival house band\, Eric has sat in with numerous acts and artists from around the country. \n\nHaving released his self-titled EP in 2015\, Eric recently finished production of his first full-length album\, Heartache Town. Exceptional performances compliment Lee’s compelling and honest vocal delivery\, as the graceful harmonies of renowned singer Tracy Grammer and the pristine mandolin of 5-time IBMA Mandolinist of the Year Jesse Brock (The Gibson Brothers) shine over the powerful and dynamic rhythm section comprised of seasoned talents Jim Henry (electric guitar)\, Paul Kochanski (bass)\, and J.J. O’Connell (drums).\nOn stage\, Eric Lee carries himself with assurance and ease\, and tells stories both unique and relatable\, and often comical. Whether solo or accompanied\, Lee’s performances set a bar of unique musicality that draws deeply from decades of study and experience\, and will continue to do so for years to come.\n\n\nOpen Mic: \nOpen mic performances will be available to all. The Zoom meeting opens at 7 for signin\, sound check\, and socializing.  The open mic begins at 7:30. \n\nConnect via Zoom:\nTopic: Poughkeepsie HVFG Open Mic\nTime: Jan. 16\, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nSee email for Zoom link.\nDon’t get our newsletters? SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Buckets of Blarney
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Buckets of Blarney. \n \nAs with most legends\, the history of Buckets of Blarney has been lost to time.  What little we do know has been gleaned from folklore\, song and the illustrated writings of the monks of the Order of St. Brendan. \nWe do know from birth records that the Bucket brothers\, Buddy (1438)\, Billy (1439]\, Barney (1440) and Santiago (1442)  were born near the Blarney Castle in County Cork\, Ireland.  Despite extensive research\, however\, no record of death can be found for any of the brothers\, which has given rise to the legend that they are living still. \nAs the story is told\, the brothers were singers of some renown throughout Cork and Kerry.   One day\, they were called to perform for the king of the leprechauns\, King Brian.  Unfortunately for the Buckets\, they were double booked for the evening and chose not to attend the King’s event.  Understandably\, the King was irate and swore that “If they won’t play for me\, they won’t play for any one” and the brothers instantly vanished. \nThe true cruelty of the King’s curse was not known until one St. Patrick’s Day when the brothers appeared in a pub outside the Blarney Castle.  They revealed that they were sent into the mists to wander a barren land where neither whiskey nor beer could be found.  It was only after hundreds of years that the King relented slightly and allowed that once a year\, for one day\, the brothers would be permitted to return to the real world to drink and sing.  When the day ended\, they would be banished once again. \nIn recent years\, for reasons unknown\, the Buckets have mysteriously appeared at Captain Jake’s in Newburgh\, NY where they sing and try to make up for 364 days without whiskey. \n\n\n\n\nOpen Mic: \nOpen mic performances will be available to all. The Zoom meeting opens at 7 for signin\, sound check\, and socializing.  The open mic begins at 7:30. \nIf you wish to perform\, please add your name and email to the link below. SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Whispering Tree
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring The Whispering Tree. \nCalled “one of the most talented duos to take stage in NYC” by Deli Magazine\, The Whispering Tree are singer/songwriter Eleanor Kleiner and multi-instrumentalist Elie Brangbour. Together\, they craft richly immersive folk-rock brimming with evocative lyrics and a panoramic musicality.\n \nInvisible Forces\, the fourth recording by the fiercely independent twosome\, debuted at #1 on the International Folk DJ charts\, with four songs in the top 20.  The album was self-produced\, fan-funded and recorded at Elie and Eleanor’s home studio in Beacon\, NY and at Old Soul Studio in Catskill\, NY and explores a deeply personal and political landscape\, with themes of hope\, despair and social consciousness. \nThe lead single\, “Fat Cat” has antecedents in Elie’s French background and the old-time gypsy jazz tradition back in his hometown while the satirical\, anti-capitalist sentiment of the lyrics is firmly rooted in the protest songs of the folk revival. \nOther album highlights include the impressionistic “These Houses\,” a song describing the haunting beauty of abandoned places; the revelatory “Heavy\,” which with elegant grace\, connects New Orleans-style jazz with the 1960s rock and pop harmony vocal tradition; the darkly foreboding environmental ballad\, “Garden;” and the sweetly rousing protest song “Bells.” \nSince its 2007 inception\, The Whispering Tree has issued two albums and two EPs\, and toured nationally and internationally. The duo has also earned prime critical acclaim from The Big Takeover Magazine and Keyboard Magazine\, among others. Other marquee career moments include being Kerrville New Folk finalists; Philadelphia Songwriter’s Project winners; and Eleanor and Elie having the honor to lend their voices to Pete Seeger and Lorre Wyatt’s album\, A More Perfect Union. \nOpen Mic: \nOpen mic performances will be available to all. The Zoom meeting opens at 7 for signin\, sound check\, and socializing.  The open mic begins at 7:30. \nIf you wish to perform\, please add your name and email to the link below. When I was 11\, I got to record an album of my music at The Tracking Room in Nashville\, Tennessee\, entitled Made You Look.  I’m a proud member of both SESAC and NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International).” \n“During the school year\, I get pretty busy – but I make time to share my music at farmers markets and other local events.  I’m the featured performer at Samuel’s Sweet Shop\, owned by actors Jeffrey Dean Morgan\, Hilarie Burton and Paul Rudd.  I won second place at Kara Dioguardi’s competition Tri-State Rocks\, and have continued to work with her organization\, Inspired Nation.  In Tennessee\, I love to sing at Antique Archaeology\, The Loveless Café\, The Station Inn\, and the Smoky Mountain Songwriters Festival. I’ve been able to share the stage with country\, bluegrass\, and folk music greats such as Bill Anderson\, Carl Jackson\, Larry Cordle\, Jerry Salley\, Bobby Tomberlin\, Don Henry\, and Tom Paxton. I play the guitar\, piano\, bell lyre\, ukulele\, banjolele\, mandolin\, charango\, and mountain dulcimer. Although I love writing songs\, I also cover country\, bluegrass\, and folk tunes\, as well as Beatles songs at the annual Fest for Beatles Fans.  I’ve also been a big fan of musicals my whole life and have been able to be a part of a few\, from voicing characters in the Magic Tree House Musical series for MTI shows to performing in musicals at the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck.” \nhttps://mollyjeannemusic.com/ \n  \n\nConnect via Zoom:\nTopic: Poughkeepsie HVFG Open Mic \n  \nFor the Zoom link\, please signup for our newsletter\, or contact the President of the Poughkeepsie chapter: John Hamilton:  HVFGPoughkeepsie@hudsonvalleyfolkguild.org. \n\n  \nOPEN MIC\nMusic starts at 7:30\, but if you arrive at 7:00 you can hear tips about how to sound your best on Zoom\, spend time catching up with friends\, and enjoying the unique Folk Guild vibe. \nIf you plan on performing\, as you enter the room\, check in with John Hamilton to see what slots are available. SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Jen Clapp
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Jen Clapp \n \nJen Clapp has been a homebirth midwife\, baker\, environmental educator\, egg packer\, landscaper\, substitute teacher\, farm educator\, nurse\, and yes\, a singer\, songwriter and musician.  She grew up in Rochester\, NY\, and started playing folk songs at age 10.  She still has the jumbo body Harmony Sovereign guitar given to her by her dad\, and it is still too big for her. \nShe began singing and playing out in 1990\, with acoustic trio Native Tongue in NYC’s East Village music scene.  The band played shows all over the city\, including a year of Sunday night gigs at Café Sin-e on St. Mark’s Place.  This was an exciting place to be\, with Jeff Buckley\, Rebecca Martin\, Susan McKeown and John Doyle playing regularly\, and visitors Sinead O’Connor\, members of U2\, Little Steven\, Luka Bloom and many others dropping in after hours to play along with the locals.  Jen left this scene after falling in love with Mommyheads drummer Dan Fisherman\, and moving out to San Francisco. \nJen started writing songs while living in California\, becoming a midwife and then mother to two children.  The family returned to the East Coast and Jen continued to write\, releasing a 10-song CD titled Lonesome Sunbeam\, in 2009.  She co-wrote two songs with Chris Difford which were released on his CD Songs from the Weald (2008).  She also co-wrote and sang the song “Longest Day of the Year” with Adam Levy on his CD\, Washing Day. She appears as a guest vocalist on numerous recordings by artists in the Hudson Valley\, where she now lives. \nJen works with the non-profit organization SageArts\, which pairs songwriters with elders in the community to create songs which reflect the lives of each elder.  She is a member of ReBurt\, an 8-piece band specializing in creative reworkings of Burt Bacharach songs. She is currently working on another recording of original songs.  https://jenclappmusic.com \nOpen Mic: \nOpen mic performances will be available to all. SUMMARY:Poughkeepsie Chapter: Dave Kearney
DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter\nof the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\n is pleased to be featuring\nDave Kearney\nin our monthly Open Mic\non Saturday\, January 15\,  2022 at 7:30pm.\n  \nDave Kearney’s songs are powerful because he has actually lived them. His heartfelt performances elicit nods of recognition\, tears\, and a line of people telling him which song moved them the most. Sure he has had influences. But that is not enough. Obviously\, he has studied his craft well. But it is the crucible of his life experiences that makes Kearney a commanding artist. \nhttps://smokinfishrecords.bandcamp.com/ \n  \n\nConnect via Zoom:\nTopic: Poughkeepsie HVFG Open Mic \n  \nFor the Zoom link\, please signup for our newsletter\, or contact the President of the Poughkeepsie chapter: John Hamilton:  HVFGPoughkeepsie@hudsonvalleyfolkguild.org.
