SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Jay Strauss
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Jay Strauss. \nJay Strauss\, a Hudson Valley-via-Bainbridge Island artist\, has crafted his debut album\, “Based on a True Story\,” with a deep connection to his musical roots. Influenced by the likes of The Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter\, and inspired by his surroundings and experiences\, Strauss’s work is rich with imagery\, social commentary\, and a touch of playful absurdity. His music\, described as a melodic puzzle box\, is built on atypical chord structures and opaque lyricism\, polished to perfection by the talented producer Andy Stack and a team of skilled musicians. Strauss’s album is the culmination of years of musical exploration\, shaped by a supportive community of creatives and his own journey through life and music. \n“Strauss uses his rough tenor and a concise approach to offer reflections on the human condition. An album that fascinates\, revealing its subtleties to those willing to get lost in its intricate details.” – TecoApple \nAlbum review https://waxvinylrecords.co.uk/jay-strauss-reviving-retro-vibes-with-sakura-and-detour/ \n~~~~~\n\nOpen mic performances will be available to all.\nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors).  Signup begins at 6:30pm and open mic begins at 7:00.  The featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nThe Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern is located in the Town of New Windsor at 9 Vance Road\, Rock Tavern\, NY\, off Route 207\, 3.4 miles west of Rte 300; or take I-84 to Exit 5A\, Rte 747 south to Rte 207\, make a right and take the second left. \nFor more information contact the President of the Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at HVFGRockTavern@hudsonvalleyfolkguild.org.

SUMMARY:Twilight Music in the Parks 2025 – Piedmont Blūz
DESCRIPTION:The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo\, comprised of Valerie and Benedict Turner\, are ambassadors of Country Blues music and the Piedmont style of fingerpicking. Their mission is to help bring awareness to this unique aspect of African-American culture\, and to the contributions of early blues artists\, through performing and teaching. \nThey have been entertaining audiences both domestically and abroad and are much loved wherever they go. As 2018 inductees into the New York Blues Hall of Fame\, this husband-and-wife duo feel that “there are stories to tell\, people to remember\, and things that must be said” so\, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music\, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song. \nA Piedmont Blūz concert isn’t just music – it’s an experience as they transport you back to the 1920s and 1930s\, the hey-day of acoustic Country Blues music. In addition to performing songs from that time-frame\, they introduce each piece with an interesting anecdote about either the composer\, the time period\, or the song itself. \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”. SUMMARY:Twilight Music in the Parks 2025: Lark
DESCRIPTION:Lark formed among friends at an annual backyard party\, coalescing around singer-guitarist Charles Wellcome whose angelic tenor is as comfortable expressing joy or sorrow\, softness or grit\, sweetness or sarcasm. Percussionist David Budd’s background and musical influences are diverse and extensive. At home playing jazz\, rock\, folk\, and blues\, David’s sensitivity to the music keeps him busy with a variety of local bands. Terri Massardo has elevated several groups throughout the Hudson Valley. Starting with Yankee Rose\, Terri has brought her rich\, soulful vocals to The Cover Girls\, The Broad Band\, and Trio Mio.\nBob Bottjer has never met a musical genre that he can’t play\, and his virtuosity on guitar and steel have got him in high demand around the region. His tasteful\, unobtrusive licks make everything sound better.\nBassist Steve Massardo is solid and steady and his harmonies round out the Lark sound. The band plays a variety of familiar\, mostly-acoustic music in three-part harmony. \n  \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”. SUMMARY:“Beyond A Simple Folk Song” Concert 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will presenting its annual “Beyond a Simple Folk Song” concert on Saturday\, July 19\, 2025\, 7:30pm\, at the Unitarian Universalist \, 67 S. Randolph Avenue\, Poughkeepsie\, N.Y. \nThis year we are excited to feature David Roth and Pat Wictor!   This will be the first time these well seasoned\, touring artists have collaborated on a show playing together!  This promises to be a great adventure in creativity as they develop genre-bending possibilities for each of their songs. These collaborations will most certainly be memorable and go well beyond the scope of a simple folk song! \n\nWe are also very pleased to present Pat Lamanna who will be dedicating her set to the memory of Lyn Burnstine.  Lyn was an accomplished and much-loved Hudson Valley folk singer and concert presenter. She was also a stalwart member of the Folk Guild. Pat will present many songs they have performed together\, as well as a couple of songs that Pat wrote about Lyn. \n\nTickets are $15\, general admission. For more information\, call 845-229-0170. \n\n  \n\n\n\n“Beyond a Simple Folk Song” was conceived in 2009 to be an annual concert of music that challenges the more experienced and advanced singer/songwriters and musicians to venture out of their comfort zones and stretch their craft beyond the typical constructs and scope of a song.  Some examples of how past performers have embraced the “Beyond” concept include “The Hudson River Folk Symphony” for chamber orchestra and folk group\, a set dedicated to the Piedmont Blues\, a “Folk” String Quartet\,  various narrated vignettes with accompanying songs\, various song cycles dedicated to particular subjects\, and an arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue” for solo guitar. \nDavid Roth strikes many chords\, hearts\, and minds with his unique songs\, offbeat observations\, moving stories\, sense of the hilarious\, and powerful singing and subject matter. As singer\, songwriter\, recording artist\, keynote speaker\, workshop leader\, and instructor\, David has earned top honors at premier songwriter competitions – Kerrville (TX) and Falcon Ridge (NY) – and taken his music\, experience\, and expertise to a wide variety of venues in this and other countries full-time for three decades. \nPat Wictor is a contemporary songwriter and interpreter drawing on the rural country\, gospel\, and blues traditions of our nation. Steeped in American “roots” music\, Pat first burst on the folk and acoustic scene as an innovative slide guitarist known for fresh and memorable interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs. He has since made his mark as a singer-songwriter penning lean and poetic songs that honor – and subvert – rural blues and gospel traditions. \nPat Lamanna has been writing and performing songs all her adult life. Her songs have a strong folk influence\, and cover issues such as peace\, religion and the environment.  One of her songs\, “Peace Pilgrim\,” is featured in part on Pete Seeger’s Grammy-nominated album\, “The Storm King.” She has three solo albums: “Full Circle”\, “Do I Know My Song Well Enough to Start Singing Yet?”\, and “Something Beautiful”. Pat was the 2019 winner of the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Dave Kearney
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Dave Kearney. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerhaps the reason that Dave Kearney’s songs are so powerful is that he has actually lived them. His heartfelt performances elicit nods of recognition\, tears\, and a line of people coming up to him after the show to tell him which song moved them the most. Sometimes it’s the one about a wounding father/daughter relationship\, or the tragedy of addiction\, or a shattering love triangle\, or a sacred experience of the natural world. Sure he has had influences. But that is not enough. And obviously he has studied his craft well. But it is the crucible of his life experiences that makes Kearney a commanding artist. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpen mic performances will be available to all.\nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors).
