SUMMARY:Poughkeepsie Chapter: Tim Robinson
DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\nwill host our monthly coffeehouse on\nSaturday\, March 15\, 2025\nat the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Poughkeepsie\, N.Y.\nThis month we are proud to be featuring Tim Robinson.\n  \nTim Robinson is a songwriter from Croton on Hudson\, NY. He got his start among the songwriters of the “Fast Folk” era in NYC when he met Jack Hardy in the early 1990’s. Through Jack\, he fell in with Suzanne Vega\, Frank Tedesso\, Richard Julian\, Bob Hillman\, and others. It was a cauldron of incredible\, vital songwriting. Tim has four full albums to his credit since those days. His first Recording\, “Money in the Woods” was produced with the help of Suzanne Vega\, who sings backing vocals on several songs and refers to Tim as one of her favorite working songwriters. That recording was nominated for the New Pantheon award and celebrated with 4 stars by Amanda Petrusich\, now famous for her role as staff music writer at The New Yorker magazine.\nCurrently\, Tim is still writing and recording music and looks to release an album of new songs\, “The Midnight Bird”\, as soon as possible. Last year (after taking a pass on songwriting competitions for the past twenty years) Tim was accepted as a New Folk finalist at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. That said\, the dates of the festival conflicted with his eldest son’s college graduation\, so… he had to say\, thank you\, but\, no. A man needs priorities. It’s funny to be “New” at age 61.\nTim is now looking to get back out there and have his hundreds unique of songs heard again by new ears. He thanks you all for coming out to listen and getting that process started.\n  \n\nOPEN MIC\n \nOpen mic performances will be available for all.\nSignup begins at 6:30 and open mic begins at 7:00.\nThe featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors). \nQuestions? Contact the President of the Poughkeepsie Chapter\, John Hamilton\, at birdman566@aol.com.

SUMMARY:Open Mic via Zoom: Marylyn Coffey
DESCRIPTION:Marylyn Coffey came of age in the Folk era of the 1960s\, performing with friends in cafés and coffee houses in and around Boston\, but never thought of taking herself seriously in that milieu. Now in her Golden Years\, as a former hippie\, graphic artist\, art publicist and university art department manager\, she is doing all the things she didn’t have time for until now. Always a poet and writer\, she started writing songs in 2020. \nIn the 1980s Marylyn moved to Huntsville\, Alabama to finish college. Singing and playing harmonica in a local Americana cover band in the 1990s was fun\, a new thing for Huntsville at the time. Marylyn first started solo performing on open mics online during COVID\, while writing songs at a rapid clip. She switched to ukulele from guitar\, which may have been a mistake\, but it’s too late now! The four strings of a ukulele lend themselves to the strange chord progressions that Marylyn comes up with. \nMarylyn performs at open mics in town and occasionally at farmers’ markets or during studio tour nights at the “alternative” arts center. In 2022 she released an all-originals CD called Can’t Feel a Thing\, and is presently working on another one. She’s also written 20 plot-related songs for a musical called Muddleville\, based on a short novel she “accidentally” wrote last year. How that project will be shared remains to be seen. \nContact: giraffe@hiwaay.net \n\n \n\nConnect via Zoom:\nTopic: HVFG 4th Saturday Open Mic via Zoom \n  \nFor the Zoom link\, please signup for our email newsletters\, or contact Ethan Campbell at ethan.1247@gmail.com. \n\n  \nOPEN MIC\nMusic starts at 7:00\, but if you arrive at 6:30 you can spend some time catching up with friends\, helping each other sound check\, and just generally enjoying the mellow Folk Guild vibe. \nEthan Campbell will be the Zoom maestro\, so if you’re a musician and you’re planning to perform\, let Ethan know as soon as you come in from the Waiting Room.  He’ll get you into the next available slot.  Everybody gets two songs or eight (8) minutes\, whichever comes first.

SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Jay Strauss
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Jay Strauss. \nJay Strauss\, a Hudson Valley-via-Bainbridge Island artist\, has crafted his debut album\, “Based on a True Story\,” with a deep connection to his musical roots. Influenced by the likes of The Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter\, and inspired by his surroundings and experiences\, Strauss’s work is rich with imagery\, social commentary\, and a touch of playful absurdity. His music\, described as a melodic puzzle box\, is built on atypical chord structures and opaque lyricism\, polished to perfection by the talented producer Andy Stack and a team of skilled musicians. Strauss’s album is the culmination of years of musical exploration\, shaped by a supportive community of creatives and his own journey through life and music. \n“Strauss uses his rough tenor and a concise approach to offer reflections on the human condition. An album that fascinates\, revealing its subtleties to those willing to get lost in its intricate details.” – TecoApple \nAlbum review https://waxvinylrecords.co.uk/jay-strauss-reviving-retro-vibes-with-sakura-and-detour/ \n~~~~~\n\nOpen mic performances will be available to all.\nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors).  Signup begins at 6:30pm and open mic begins at 7:00.  The featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nThe Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern is located in the Town of New Windsor at 9 Vance Road\, Rock Tavern\, NY\, off Route 207\, 3.4 miles west of Rte 300; or take I-84 to Exit 5A\, Rte 747 south to Rte 207\, make a right and take the second left. \nFor more information contact the President of the Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at HVFGRockTavern@hudsonvalleyfolkguild.org.

DESCRIPTION:Storm King Skyline:\nKevin & Carol Becker\, Rich Keyes\, Ken & Linda Sheehan \nStart with deep roots in traditional folk music\, add musical versatility\, mix in both historical and contemporary themes\, all seasoned with a healthy dose of good-natured humor\, then enjoy a performance by Storm King Skyline. \nA newly formed musical group\, Storm King Skyline has developed a unique sound that combines breathtaking vocals\, instrumental dexterity\, and a synergy that comes only from an intimate knowledge of each other’s talents.  That sound starts with Kevin’s intricate finger picked guitar\, augmented by his impeccable harmonica playing.  Carol’s soaring vocals – clear\, bright\, and pure\, stand out when singing solo and form compelling harmonies with Kevin and Ken’s baritone voices.  Ken adds the skillful touch of a virtuoso on guitar and the sound is all anchored by Rich’s solid rhythms on upright bass and his driving bluegrass-influenced banjo.  They feature Linda on tambourine and light percussion.  Carol adds other instruments as well\, notably mountain dulcimer\, recorder\, bodhran\, and Appalachian limber horse.  Their repertoire ranges from historical ballads to songs of social significance and from traditional folk songs to the original songs of the band members.  Storm King Skyline has an easy manner and relaxed stage presence which encourages audience participation and contributes to their entertaining performances. \n  \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”. SUMMARY:Twilight Music in the Parks 2025 – Piedmont Blūz
DESCRIPTION:The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo\, comprised of Valerie and Benedict Turner\, are ambassadors of Country Blues music and the Piedmont style of fingerpicking. Their mission is to help bring awareness to this unique aspect of African-American culture\, and to the contributions of early blues artists\, through performing and teaching. \nThey have been entertaining audiences both domestically and abroad and are much loved wherever they go. As 2018 inductees into the New York Blues Hall of Fame\, this husband-and-wife duo feel that “there are stories to tell\, people to remember\, and things that must be said” so\, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music\, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song. \nA Piedmont Blūz concert isn’t just music – it’s an experience as they transport you back to the 1920s and 1930s\, the hey-day of acoustic Country Blues music. In addition to performing songs from that time-frame\, they introduce each piece with an interesting anecdote about either the composer\, the time period\, or the song itself. \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”. SUMMARY:“Beyond A Simple Folk Song” Concert 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will presenting its annual “Beyond a Simple Folk Song” concert on Saturday\, July 19\, 2025\, 7:30pm\, at the Unitarian Universalist \, 67 S. Randolph Avenue\, Poughkeepsie\, N.Y. \nThis year we are excited to feature David Roth and Pat Wictor!   This will be the first time these well seasoned\, touring artists have collaborated on a show playing together!  This promises to be a great adventure in creativity as they develop genre-bending possibilities for each of their songs. These collaborations will most certainly be memorable and go well beyond the scope of a simple folk song! \n\nWe are also very pleased to present Pat Lamanna who will be dedicating her set to the memory of Lyn Burnstine.  Lyn was an accomplished and much-loved Hudson Valley folk singer and concert presenter. She was also a stalwart member of the Folk Guild. Pat will present many songs they have performed together\, as well as a couple of songs that Pat wrote about Lyn. \n\nTickets are $15\, general admission. For more information\, call 845-229-0170. \n\n  \n\n\n\n“Beyond a Simple Folk Song” was conceived in 2009 to be an annual concert of music that challenges the more experienced and advanced singer/songwriters and musicians to venture out of their comfort zones and stretch their craft beyond the typical constructs and scope of a song.  Some examples of how past performers have embraced the “Beyond” concept include “The Hudson River Folk Symphony” for chamber orchestra and folk group\, a set dedicated to the Piedmont Blues\, a “Folk” String Quartet\,  various narrated vignettes with accompanying songs\, various song cycles dedicated to particular subjects\, and an arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue” for solo guitar. \nDavid Roth strikes many chords\, hearts\, and minds with his unique songs\, offbeat observations\, moving stories\, sense of the hilarious\, and powerful singing and subject matter. As singer\, songwriter\, recording artist\, keynote speaker\, workshop leader\, and instructor\, David has earned top honors at premier songwriter competitions – Kerrville (TX) and Falcon Ridge (NY) – and taken his music\, experience\, and expertise to a wide variety of venues in this and other countries full-time for three decades. \nPat Wictor is a contemporary songwriter and interpreter drawing on the rural country\, gospel\, and blues traditions of our nation. Steeped in American “roots” music\, Pat first burst on the folk and acoustic scene as an innovative slide guitarist known for fresh and memorable interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs. He has since made his mark as a singer-songwriter penning lean and poetic songs that honor – and subvert – rural blues and gospel traditions. \nPat Lamanna has been writing and performing songs all her adult life. Her songs have a strong folk influence\, and cover issues such as peace\, religion and the environment.  One of her songs\, “Peace Pilgrim\,” is featured in part on Pete Seeger’s Grammy-nominated album\, “The Storm King.” She has three solo albums: “Full Circle”\, “Do I Know My Song Well Enough to Start Singing Yet?”\, and “Something Beautiful”. Pat was the 2019 winner of the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:***CANCELLED*** Twilight Music in the Parks 2025: Betty and the Baby Boomers
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER – by the NYS Parks Dept\nThe Hudson Valley acoustic group Betty and the Baby Boomers (Betty Boomer\, Jean Valla McAvoy\, Paul Rubeo\, Robert Bard\, and Steve Stanne) have been recognized regionally – they “sing and play old-school folk like it was brand spanking new” (Kingston’s Daily Freeman); nationally – “a refreshing reminder of the halcyon days of American folk music” (Sing Out!); and internationally\, with many bookings over the years for Clifden Arts Week\, a well-known festival in Ireland. \nAs Clearwater staff and board members\, the Boomers worked with Pete Seeger\, who regularly performed one of McAvoy’s original songs\, “Down by the River\,” included on his Grammy-winning album Tomorrow’s Children with the Rivertown Kids. They wrap distinctive harmonies around songs from Seeger\, Phil Ochs\, and others who inspired their generation\, plus contemporary and original material in that tradition. SUMMARY:Twilight Music in the Parks 2025: Grampa Joe’s Washboard Band
DESCRIPTION:Grampa Joe’s Washboard Band was formed in 2017. The band is made up of Grampa Joe Cardella on vocals and washboard\, Len Nelson on vocals and stand-up fretless bass\, and Wayne Chadwell on vocals and 6-string high-strung banjo. The music choices are intended to offer something interestingly different from mainstream and are intended to offer surprises and humor. \nYou can find Grampa Joe’s Washboard Band on YouTube and at this link:  https://jumpshare.com/b/5WfiBf6OXI5pYc8Q5hrO \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”.
