SUMMARY:2024 Folk Guild 45th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:2024 Folk Guild 45th Anniversary concert\nThe Local Center for Arts and Culture\, 16 John St\, Saugerties\, NY 12477\nSunday\, October 13th at 2pm\nAdmission at the door:  $8 HVFG members\, $10 non-members \n\nEach act will perform 2 songs and share memories connected with their association with the HVFG over the 45 years.\nThe following performers will be featured: \n\n\nLinda Breithaupt (who will also emcee)\nJim Pospisil\nIndigo   (Steve and Terri Massardo\, with Bob Bottjer)\nKurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert\nPat Lamanna\nDeb Martin\nDon and Maureen Black\nJohn Schin\nJames Leo\nAndy Shapiro\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Breithaupt \nLinda Breithaupt\nWith a strong clear voice\, Linda Breithaupt is at home with folk\, gospel or blues with the occasional humorous tale. A regional performer for many years\, Linda will be joined for part of her set by her frequent singing partner\, Linda Bresnahan McCarthy. Together they are known for their tight intricate harmonies and will delight with some holiday favors. \n  \n  \n  \n\nJim Pospisil\n \nJim Pospisil\nJim Pospisil is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Hudson Valley whose songs are marked by well crafted\, sometimes quirky lyrics and themes from the personal to the profound. A mix of folk\, blues\, rock and more\, his performances on guitar\, mandolin\, flute and harmonica can be soft and subtle\, or wild and energetic. He blends it all with a wry sense of humor\, his goal is to make you laugh\, cry\, or think. Sometimes all at once. He performs cover songs as well\, featuring fresh and creative arrangements. Jim has just released his fourth album “Sleight Of Hand”\, his most varied and ambitious release to date. The songs examine the trials of love\, life and loss\, and the challenge to rise above it all.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nIndigo\n \nIndigo\nIndigo is a trio featuring Terri Massardo on vocals\, Bob Bottjer on guitar\, and Steve Massardo on bass. They perform vintage blues and jazz standards.\nTerri and Steve Massardo have spent time in various musical ensembles for almost 30 years\, including Yankee Rose\, The Tennessee Virgins\, What Four\, The Jesse Janes\, and The Broad Band\, and currently have the distinction of being the 4th and 5th members of a band called Trio Mio. They made their local debut at the Hudson Valley Folk Guild in 1999. They have produced many concert events throughout the region since 2004\, and have done exhaustive research on live music throughout some of the Hudson Valley’s best bars and restaurants.\nBob Bottjer has never met a musical genre that he can’t play\, and his virtuosity on guitar and steel have got him in high demand around the region. His tasteful\, unobtrusive licks make everything sound better. \n  \n\nKurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert \nKurt Henry & Cheryl Lambert\nKurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert\, a dynamic guitar/harmonica duo\, always surprise and delight people with the diversity of their repertoire\, both covers and originals. Kurt’s popularity as a guitarist is due in part to the range of styles he displays\, while the duet taken as a whole–guitar\, harmonica\, percussion and harmony vocals–seems like more than two busy musicians\, making for a compelling performance. \n\nPat Lamanna\n \nPat Lamanna\nPat Lamanna has been writing and performing songs all her adult life. Her songs have been praised highly by Pete Seeger\, Peter Yarrow\, and others. They have a strong folk influence\, and cover issues such as peace\, religion and the environment. Pat was Sonny Ochs’ pick to perform in the Folk DJ Showcase at the 2012 conference of the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. One of her songs\, “Peace Pilgrim\,” is featured in part on Pete Seeger’s Grammy-nominated album\, “The Storm King.” She has three solo albums: “Full Circle” (2009); “Do I Know My Song Well Enough to Start Singing Yet?” (2012); and “Something Beautiful (2017). She is a 2019 winner of the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. \n\nDeb Martin\n \nDeb Martin\nAn expressive\, euphonic voice\, a steady guitar\, a mood\, and perhaps a memory. Deb Martin plays originals and covers with soulful\, rich\, and sometimes even playful vocals. Her originals focus on women’s stories\, family\, politics and love. An entertainer at heart\, she performs a variety of covers “her way” as she interacts with her audiences. You can find her at local venues and fairs as a solo act\, and as a part of the trio\, MartinTullyKlein. \n\nDon and Maureen Black\n \nDon and Maureen Black\nDon and Maureen Black began taking guitar lessons with Helen Avakian in September of 2008. They first played together in public in January 2013 under the name “Never Too Late”. Since then they have played together in a variety of local venues\, most notably in the “Teachers”-themed John Street Jam\, and in a Lou Reed tribute in Nyack. They play regularly at the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\, the Hyde Park Library\, the High Falls Café\, and at Richard’s Rhinecliff Acoustic Show at Morton Library. They enjoy playing humorous songs and\, most especially\, songs written by local artists. \n\nJohn Schin\n \nJohn Schin\nJohn Schin is a singer songwriter from Pawling New York. He has been performing original songs and eclectic covers at open mics throughout the Hudson valley. His songs tell stories. Some make you laugh\, some hit your heart\, some make you think. \n\nJames Leo\n \nJames Leo\nJames Leo\, a native of Bensonhurst\, Brooklyn\, experienced a life-changing moment in 1970 when he encountered the music of Sam “Lightin” Hopkins. Inspired by the mastery and emotive power of Hopkins’ blues\, James decided to learn to play the guitar\, attempting to echo the unique sounds and feelings produced by the acclaimed bluesman.\nAs he embarked on his musical journey\, James expanded his influences to include Robert Johnson and Django Reinhardt\, the latter known for his contributions to gypsy jazz. Further enhancing his skills\, he had the opportunity to study under the guidance of the late Danny Kalb and Frank Christian\, both prominent figures in the Greenwich Village music scene. He is currently studying with Mike Dowling and will forever be a “student of the guitar.” \n\nAndy Shapiro \nAndy Shapiro\nAndy has performed in a variety of bands since 1968 including blues\, soul\, country\, rock\, and original music. For the last 5 years he has been focusing on writing songs and performing as a singer songwriter in the Hudson Valley and has released his first cd: “Find My Way Home” which received Honorable Mention in the 14th Annual emPower Posi Music Awards. He is now working on his second cd with songs of struggle and hope.

SUMMARY:Open Mic via Zoom: Corinne Curcio
DESCRIPTION:Corinne Curcio began playing guitar at age 10\, and had her first performance in the 8th grade\, rocking electric guitar in a band for a school play. Her musicianship was influenced by artists like The Beatles\, Richard Thompson\, Joni Mitchell\, Jefferson Airplane and XTC. It wasn’t until many years later at age 39 she felt brave enough to perform her own songs at an open mic. This led to many opportunities to perform in venues throughout the tri-state area as well as the famed Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta and the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. She released 3 CDs as a solo artist (and has material for another 3!) and In addition\, performed and recorded a CD as a member of the trio Estrogen. She hasn’t performed on a live stage in a while\, so is very thankful to have the opportunity to play for the Hudson Valley Folk Guild. \nCorinne may be reached at:  corona_curcio@yahoo.com \n\n \n\nConnect via Zoom:\nTopic: HVFG 4th Saturday Open Mic via Zoom \n  \nFor the Zoom link\, please signup for our email newsletters\, or contact Ethan Campbell at ethan.1247@gmail.com. \n\n  \nOPEN MIC\nMusic starts at 7:00\, but if you arrive at 6:30 you can spend some time catching up with friends\, helping each other sound check\, and just generally enjoying the mellow Folk Guild vibe. \nEthan Campbell will be the Zoom maestro\, so if you’re a musician and you’re planning to perform\, let Ethan know as soon as you come in from the Waiting Room.  He’ll get you into the next available slot.  Everybody gets two songs or eight (8) minutes\, whichever comes first.

SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Kathy Mark
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Kathy Mark. \n~~~~~ \nThere hasn’t been a time when music wasn’t a part of singer/songwriter Kathy Mark’s life.  As Polish heritage would dictate\, her first musical instrument was an accordion\, which weighed almost as much as she did!  By age 13\, Kathy was borrowing guitars from friends who had lost interest in their own music lessons and was teaching herself guitar basics. \nAn amateur luthier for 25 years\, Kathy is now focusing on “polishing” her music and “building” a rapport with musicians\, and music lovers\, by playing her own instruments and those of fellow boutique guitar builders. \nKathy is a long time student of international finger-style guitar champion\, Helen Avakian. She has also been influenced by the musical style of Nanci Griffith\, as well as Sungha Jung\, Sara Barielles\, and the blues legend\, Keb’ Mo’. \nThe wonder and awe of guitar never grows old: six strings with infinite possibilities! \n~~~~~\n\nOpen mic performances will be available to all.\nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors).  Signup begins at 6:30pm and open mic begins at 7:00.  The featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nThe Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern is located in the Town of New Windsor at 9 Vance Road\, Rock Tavern\, NY\, off Route 207\, 3.4 miles west of Rte 300; or take I-84 to Exit 5A\, Rte 747 south to Rte 207\, make a right and take the second left. \nFor more information contact the President of the Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at HVFGRockTavern@hudsonvalleyfolkguild.org.

SUMMARY:Poughkeepsie Chapter: Scott Lichtenstein
DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\nwill host our monthly coffeehouse on\nSaturday\, December 21\, 2024\nat the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Poughkeepsie\, N.Y.\nThis month we are proud to be featuring Scott Lichtenstein.\n  \nScott Lichtenstein has always been extremely passionate about music. He gained musical knowledge from both of his parents who were both musically talented. His father played piano and guitar and his mother also played piano and was professionally trained as a vocalist.  Music was a huge part of the family. Throughout elementary school\, Scott would sing in chorus and learn to play trombone. His first solo experience was when he was in 5th grade where he was given the opportunity to perform in a talent show where he sang Hound Dog by Elvis Presley. \nHe continued his musical experiences singing in chorus in high school.  He performed in a show called Ossining Live and sang Somebody to Love by Queen. After doing chorus in his freshman year of high school\, he had many more opportunities to sing in a music class called Gimme the Mic. His music teacher\, Ms. Kafer recognized his talent and gave him the opportunity to have his own concert. He sang with his chorus group at the town tree lighting\, high school graduation and performed as a soloist at  the Village Fair. \nAfter high school he moved to Florida where he continued his musical experiences in college and joined Voices of Valencia.  A few years later\, he moved back to the Hudson Valley area and has had many opportunities to sing at  Open Mic engagements at various locations including Paula’s Café\, The Adriance Memorial Library\, and the Unitarian Fellowship Church. He had been looking around the area for more singing opportunities for adults that was inclusive and found the Mid-Hudson IBM Chorus which he is a current member. This group has increased his musical knowledge and repertoire and has given him the spark in his life and he feels that he has accomplished this goal. Last spring\, he was selected to do a solo of Giants in the Sky from the Broadway musical Into the Woods.  The accompanist chose this song for him because she felt he could express himself and show his singing skills. Singing makes him calm and he loves performing on stage. \n  \n\nOPEN MIC\n \nOpen mic performances will be available for all.\nSignup begins at 6:30 and open mic begins at 7:00.\nThe featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors). \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Poughkeepsie Chapter: Tim Robinson
DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\nwill host our monthly coffeehouse on\nSaturday\, March 15\, 2025\nat the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Poughkeepsie\, N.Y.\nThis month we are proud to be featuring Tim Robinson.\n  \nTim Robinson is a songwriter from Croton on Hudson\, NY. He got his start among the songwriters of the “Fast Folk” era in NYC when he met Jack Hardy in the early 1990’s. Through Jack\, he fell in with Suzanne Vega\, Frank Tedesso\, Richard Julian\, Bob Hillman\, and others. It was a cauldron of incredible\, vital songwriting. Tim has four full albums to his credit since those days. His first Recording\, “Money in the Woods” was produced with the help of Suzanne Vega\, who sings backing vocals on several songs and refers to Tim as one of her favorite working songwriters. That recording was nominated for the New Pantheon award and celebrated with 4 stars by Amanda Petrusich\, now famous for her role as staff music writer at The New Yorker magazine.\nCurrently\, Tim is still writing and recording music and looks to release an album of new songs\, “The Midnight Bird”\, as soon as possible. Last year (after taking a pass on songwriting competitions for the past twenty years) Tim was accepted as a New Folk finalist at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. That said\, the dates of the festival conflicted with his eldest son’s college graduation\, so… he had to say\, thank you\, but\, no. A man needs priorities. It’s funny to be “New” at age 61.\nTim is now looking to get back out there and have his hundreds unique of songs heard again by new ears. He thanks you all for coming out to listen and getting that process started.\n  \n\nOPEN MIC\n \nOpen mic performances will be available for all.\nSignup begins at 6:30 and open mic begins at 7:00.\nThe featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:00. \nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors). \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Open Mic via Zoom: Marylyn Coffey
DESCRIPTION:Marylyn Coffey came of age in the Folk era of the 1960s\, performing with friends in cafés and coffee houses in and around Boston\, but never thought of taking herself seriously in that milieu. Now in her Golden Years\, as a former hippie\, graphic artist\, art publicist and university art department manager\, she is doing all the things she didn’t have time for until now. Always a poet and writer\, she started writing songs in 2020. \nIn the 1980s Marylyn moved to Huntsville\, Alabama to finish college. Singing and playing harmonica in a local Americana cover band in the 1990s was fun\, a new thing for Huntsville at the time. Marylyn first started solo performing on open mics online during COVID\, while writing songs at a rapid clip. She switched to ukulele from guitar\, which may have been a mistake\, but it’s too late now! The four strings of a ukulele lend themselves to the strange chord progressions that Marylyn comes up with. \nMarylyn performs at open mics in town and occasionally at farmers’ markets or during studio tour nights at the “alternative” arts center. In 2022 she released an all-originals CD called Can’t Feel a Thing\, and is presently working on another one. She’s also written 20 plot-related songs for a musical called Muddleville\, based on a short novel she “accidentally” wrote last year. How that project will be shared remains to be seen. \nContact: giraffe@hiwaay.net \n\n \n\nConnect via Zoom:\nTopic: HVFG 4th Saturday Open Mic via Zoom \n  \nFor the Zoom link\, please signup for our email newsletters\, or contact Ethan Campbell at ethan.1247@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Jay Strauss
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Jay Strauss. \nJay Strauss\, a Hudson Valley-via-Bainbridge Island artist\, has crafted his debut album\, “Based on a True Story\,” with a deep connection to his musical roots. Influenced by the likes of The Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter\, and inspired by his surroundings and experiences\, Strauss’s work is rich with imagery\, social commentary\, and a touch of playful absurdity. His music\, described as a melodic puzzle box\, is built on atypical chord structures and opaque lyricism\, polished to perfection by the talented producer Andy Stack and a team of skilled musicians. Strauss’s album is the culmination of years of musical exploration\, shaped by a supportive community of creatives and his own journey through life and music. \n“Strauss uses his rough tenor and a concise approach to offer reflections on the human condition. An album that fascinates\, revealing its subtleties to those willing to get lost in its intricate details.” – TecoApple \nAlbum review https://waxvinylrecords.co.uk/jay-strauss-reviving-retro-vibes-with-sakura-and-detour/ \n~~~~~\n\nOpen mic performances will be available to all.\nCost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors).
