SUMMARY:Rock Tavern Chapter: Jude Roberts
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Jude Roberts on Saturday\, May 13\, 2023.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nEvocative and refreshingly melodic\, Jude’s music makes you feel you’ve rediscovered a song you never knew. Roberts is a New York-born and raised singer\, songwriter\, and recording artist. He became involved in the local New York music scene after graduating from Purchase College (1997) where he majored in Studio Composition. He went on to tour nationally and internationally. \nJude was selected to perform at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 2018 as part of the Emerging Artist Showcase. In 2019\, he collaborated with the SageArts project to create a song based on the life of Holocaust survivor Tommy Wald. This song\, “Suzanne”\, was one of four songs featured in the PBS documentary\, “We Remember: Songs of Survivors” aired in early 2022. \nHaving traveled extensively throughout Europe for performance and pleasure\, he then launched a project leading music-focused retreats to Greece in October 2019. Although global lockdowns postponed the planned July 2020 retreat to Santorini\, this project will resume with renewed vigor in 2024. \nHe fingerpicks with the delicacy\, assurance and color of Nick Drake; sings with the bell-like clarity and gentle high end of a lost Finn brother; and writes Anglo- and pop-inflected folksongs with the offhand grace and deceptive sophistication of early James Taylor\, Richard Thompson or Sir Paul himself.\n – John Burdick\, Hudson Valley One\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpen mic performances will be available to all. Cost of admission for this event is $7 ($6 for Folk Guild members and seniors).  Signup begins at 7 and open mic begins at 7:30.  The featured performance is expected to begin at approximately 8:30. \nThe Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern is located in the Town of New Windsor at 9 Vance Road\, Rock Tavern\, NY\, off Route 207\, 3.4 miles west of Rte 300; or take I-84 to Exit 5A\, Rte 747 south to Rte 207\, make a right and take the second left. \nWe have returned to in-person performances on the second Saturday of every month\, weather and pandemic permitting.  We also intend to stream the performances on Zoom for those unable to attend in person.  We will not be including remote performances\, but you can watch at the Zoom link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83220662299?pwd=eGxNV0dNK0xUekhxaHpzZTJ3VXlSUT09 \nFor more information call Maureen Black\, President of the Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\, at 845-464-2526. \nFor those who still wish to perform from home\, the Hudson Valley Folk Guild has created a fourth virtual chapter that will meet every fourth Saturday.  That chapter will be hosted on Zoom by Ethan Campbell.  Check the web page for that link.

The band is made up of Grampa Joe Cardella on vocals and washboard\, Vince Sauter on vocals and stand-up fretless bass\, and Wayne Chadwell on vocals and 6-string high-strung banjo. All three members have played in bands and as individuals since they were teenagers and all three play other instruments and have other musical interests as well. \nThe style of music is difficult to describe so they simply call it “New Orleans style jazz\, blues\, string band\, jug band\, washboard band music”. DESCRIPTION:Storm King Skyline:\nKevin & Carol Becker\, Rich Keyes\, Ken & Linda Sheehan \nStart with deep roots in traditional folk music\, add musical versatility\, mix in both historical and contemporary themes\, all seasoned with a healthy dose of good-natured humor\, then enjoy a performance by Storm King Skyline. \nA newly formed musical group\, Storm King Skyline has developed a unique sound that combines breathtaking vocals\, instrumental dexterity\, and a synergy that comes only from an intimate knowledge of each other’s talents.  That sound starts with Kevin’s intricate finger picked guitar\, augmented by his impeccable harmonica playing.  Carol’s soaring vocals – clear\, bright\, and pure\, stand out when singing solo and form compelling harmonies with Kevin and Ken’s baritone voices.  Ken adds the skillful touch of a virtuoso on guitar and the sound is all anchored by Rich’s solid rhythms on upright bass and his driving bluegrass-influenced banjo.  They feature Linda on tambourine and light percussion.  Carol adds other instruments as well\, notably mountain dulcimer\, recorder\, bodhran\, and Appalachian limber horse.  Their repertoire ranges from historical ballads to songs of social significance and from traditional folk songs to the original songs of the band members.  Storm King Skyline has an easy manner and relaxed stage presence which encourages audience participation and contributes to their entertaining performances. \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”. SUMMARY:“Beyond A Simple Folk Song” Concert 2023
DESCRIPTION:“Beyond A Simple Folk Song” is a concert which challenges folk artists to go beyond what they normally do and stretch their art beyond their comfort zone.  For this concert\, please join our headline act\, Betty and the Baby Boomers\, for a “trip” down memory lane as they wander through “their generation” making periodic stops with signature tunes from a great musical era. \nThe Stissing Center\, July 30\, 2023 at 2pm\, 2950 Church St\, Pine Plains\, NY 12567\nTickets are available on line at the website – www.thestissingcenter.org\n$15 in advance\, $20 at the door \n\nBetty and the Baby Boomers\n”Sounds like either a yuppie- oriented pop group or an outfit starring Betty with some sort of backup band. As it happens\, neither is anything remotely like the reality. Despite having given her name to the proceedings\, Betty Boomer is just one of the equal partners in a likable and eminently folk-oriented [quintet] … I enjoyed the group very much.” \n                                    Bob Sherman\, host of “Woody’s Children” –\nWQXR and WFUV\, New York\, NY \nWhen Betty Boomer\, Jean Valla McAvoy\, Paul Rubeo\, and Steve Stanne began singing together more than 35 years ago\, the name made sense—a play on Betty’s name and the fact that they all are children of the baby boom era. If they’ve had second thoughts\, it’s too late to change now. “Betty and the Baby Boomers” appears on the covers of the band’s five CDs\, and the name is known to folk music fans from the mountains of Connemara in Ireland to the Catskills overlooking New York’s Hudson Valley\, their home base. \nThe American folk genre covers many styles.  In addition to original songs from Jean\, the Boomers draw on sources including traditional tunes\, Americana roots music\, contemporary artists like Greg Brown\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Dougie MacClean\, and classic “folksingers” like Woody Guthrie\, Pete Seeger\, and Phil Ochs.  Whatever the source\, each song is “Boomerized” – set in distinctive arrangements with three and four-part harmonies. The singers’ voices differ in range and color; they combine in a unique and resonant blend that is the Boomers’ signature. Their vocals are coupled to impressive instrumental work on guitars\, Dobro\, bass\, bodhran\, and kazoo\, or sometimes a capella selections. \nThe group’s talents have led to frequent performances in venues such as the Eighth Step in New York’s Capital region\, the Towne Crier in Beacon\, and at Phil Ochs Song Night concerts in rooms ranging from New York City’s Village Gate to the Nameless Coffeehouse in Cambridge\, Mass. The group is regularly booked along with the likes of the Chieftains\, Paul Brady\, and Christy Moore to perform during the Clifden Community Arts Festival in County Galway\, Ireland; 2022 marked the Boomers’ 17th engagement at this festival\, which has been running for forty-five years. \n\nHVFG Opening Act:\nThe Coffeehouse – A Creative Community \nJoin Kevin Becker\, Phil Miller\, Neil Okeson and Jim Pospisil as they take you on a collaborative journey in song\, exploring past and present-day coffeehouse communities.

SUMMARY:Twilight Music in the Parks 2023 – Vito Petroccitto
DESCRIPTION:Vito Petroccitto is magic. And we’re not just talking about the way he deftly casts alternating spells on his audiences\, moving them either to awe\, tears\, full-out belly laughs\, or all three at once. Armed with his gritty\, dirty\, swampy telecaster guitar\, or his beautiful Taylor acoustic\, his crazy-good vocals\, and more than a touch of genius\, Vito has somehow figured out how to do the work of ten men. If he’s not performing all over the Hudson Valley with “Four Guys in Disguise” (the band he co-founded in 1989\, voted “Best of the Hudson Valley” for years running)\, he’s out gigging with his newest brainchild\, “Little Rock” a swampy blues and funk\, Americana band. \nThink Little Feat meets John Fogerty meets the Grateful Dead. SUMMARY:Twilight Music in the Parks 2023 – Piedmont Blūz
DESCRIPTION:The Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo\, comprised of Valerie and Benedict Turner\, are ambassadors of Country Blues music and the Piedmont style of fingerpicking. Their mission is to help bring awareness to this unique aspect of African-American culture\, and to the contributions of early blues artists\, through performing and teaching. \nThey have been entertaining audiences both domestically and abroad and are much loved wherever they go. As 2018 inductees into the New York Blues Hall of Fame\, this husband-and-wife duo feel that “there are stories to tell\, people to remember\, and things that must be said” so\, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music\, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song. \nA Piedmont Blūz concert isn’t just music – it’s an experience as they transport you back to the 1920s and 1930s\, the hey-day of acoustic Country Blues music. In addition to performing songs from that time-frame\, they introduce each piece with an interesting anecdote about either the composer\, the time period\, or the song itself.
