Photo credit Cindy Gould\, Beacon\, NY\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA relaxed and warm-voiced balladeer\, Lydia brings an improvisational flair to her original and traditional songs. \nLydia grew up in New England and the Hudson Valley\, where she was active with Pete Seeger and the Hudson River Sloop Singers. She also lived in Brooklyn for many years\, earning a Master of Science degree in Deaf Education from Hunter College and raising her daughter\, the jazz vocalist Romeyn Adams Nesbitt. \nLydia performed songs in a unique Country/Folk style at the Bottom Line\, the Gaslight Café and enduring Folk venues such as the People’s Voice Café where she returns in person (and via livestream) with Judy Kass on March 4\, 2023. \nSeveral CDs document her Woman’s Gift of Story landscape\, and her environmental focus. Her latest CD release is called\,  “I Love to See You Smile\,” a collection of family-oriented educational stories and songs that span the seasons.  \nAn  advocate for special education\, Janie recorded an Autism awareness EP\, “In His Eyes / Living with Autism\,”. DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\nwill host our monthly coffeehouse open mic this coming\nSaturday\, March 18\, 2023\nat the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Poughkeepsie\, N.Y.\n  \nThis month we are proud to be featuring Storm King Skyline.\n  \nStorm King Skyline is Kevin & Carol Becker\, Rich Keyes\, Ken & Linda Sheehan. \nStart with deep roots in traditional folk music\, add musical versatility\, mix in both historical and contemporary themes\, all seasoned with a healthy dose of good-natured humor\, then enjoy a performance by Storm King Skyline. \nA newly formed musical group\, Storm King Skyline has developed a unique sound that combines breathtaking vocals\, instrumental dexterity\, and a synergy that comes only from an intimate knowledge of each other’s talents. That sound starts with Kevin’s intricate finger picked guitar\, augmented by his impeccable harmonica playing. Carol’s soaring vocals – clear\, bright\, and pure\, stand out when singing solo and form compelling harmonies with Kevin and Ken’s baritone voices. Ken adds the skillful touch of a virtuoso on guitar and Linda adds some light percussion. The entire sound is anchored by Rich’s solid rhythms on upright bass and his driving bluegrass-influenced banjo. They feature other instruments as well\, notably mountain dulcimer\, recorder\, bodhran\, and Appalachian limber horse. Their repertoire ranges from historical ballads to songs of social significance and from traditional folk songs to the original songs of the band members. I pride myself in my style of guitar playing. Hope you enjoy.” \nHVFG Note: Dave is a magical performer who creates a mood that allows the listener to drop into the song and experience being part of the music. DESCRIPTION:The Kingston Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild will host our monthly coffeehouse open mic\nSaturday\, April 1\, 2023\nat the Unitarian Fellowship\, 320 Sawkill Rd.\, Kingston.\n\nOur featured performers are Don and Maureen Black.\n\nDon and Maureen Black began taking guitar lessons with Helen Avakian in September of 2008. They first played together in public in January 2013 under the name “Never Too Late”. DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\nwill host our monthly coffeehouse open mic this coming\nSaturday\, April 15\, 2023\nat the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Poughkeepsie\, N.Y.\n  \nThis month we are proud to be featuring Don Lombardi\, Jim Pospisil and Vince Sauter.\n  \n\nDon Lombardi is a long-time performing member of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild. He is widely regarded as an excellent songwriter who brings a big heart to all his musical  expressions. His Poughkeepsie appearance is a “comeback” performance after being away from the stage for a while. \nJim Pospisil is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose songs are marked by well crafted\, sometimes quirky lyrics and themes from the personal to the profound. A mix of folk\, blues\, rock and more\, his performances on guitar\, mandolin\, flute and harmonica are superb and energetic. \n\nVince Sauter writes and performs songs that can be soft\, subtle and make you think! He will be playing the stand-up fretless bass in this ensemble. Vince’s performances always feature fresh and creative arrangements. Vince (as is Don)\, is an excellent luthier and instrument maker. \nAll three members have played in bands and as individuals. DESCRIPTION:Andy Jones is a singer/songwriter inspired by an eclectic mix of ’60s San Francisco rock\, Brazilian music\, folk\, soul and jazz. His original songs are known for their rhythmic feel and life-affirming themes. He enjoys performing solo in intimate settings and on ZOOM\, as well as performing live with his band Circus of Wolves. \nAndy’s past musical credits include recording and performing with songstress Maria Muldaur\, opening twice for SF legends Jefferson Starship\, and supporting Professor Louie & The Crowmatix at B.B. DESCRIPTION:The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Jude Roberts on Saturday\, May 13\, 2023.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nEvocative and refreshingly melodic\, Jude’s music makes you feel you’ve rediscovered a song you never knew. Roberts is a New York-born and raised singer\, songwriter\, and recording artist. He became involved in the local New York music scene after graduating from Purchase College (1997) where he majored in Studio Composition. He went on to tour nationally and internationally. \nJude was selected to perform at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 2018 as part of the Emerging Artist Showcase. In 2019\, he collaborated with the SageArts project to create a song based on the life of Holocaust survivor Tommy Wald. This song\, “Suzanne”\, was one of four songs featured in the PBS documentary\, “We Remember: Songs of Survivors” aired in early 2022. \nHaving traveled extensively throughout Europe for performance and pleasure\, he then launched a project leading music-focused retreats to Greece in October 2019. DESCRIPTION:Mary Pazienza started playing guitar five years ago following her retirement\, and a lot has happened for her\, both creatively and musically\, since that time. \nIn 2019\, Mary started writing songs\, and has now published two volumes of Lyric Poems\, Livin’ The Dream and Watercolors. Her songs are introspective and wide-ranging thematically\, drawing on topics as diverse as relationships\, mental health\, social justice and food. \nMary is a regular member of the Tasty Tunes Zoom Open Mic on Thursday evenings\, and her music is featured at many local open mics\, including the three brick-and-mortar events presented by the Folk Guild. DESCRIPTION:Andy Shapiro has performed in a variety of bands since 1968 including blues\, soul\, country\, rock\, and original music. For the last 5 years he has been focusing on writing songs and performing as a singer songwriter in the Hudson Valley and has released his first cd: “Find My Way Home” which received Honorable Mention in the 14th Annual emPower Posi Music Awards. He is now working on his second cd with songs of struggle and hope. \nLydia Adams Davis is a relaxed and warm-voiced balladeer who brings an improvisational flair to her original and traditional songs. Lydia grew up in New England and the Hudson Valley\, where she was active with Pete Seeger and the Hudson River Sloop Singers. She has several CD releases to her credit including “One Earth So Green and Round” which in 2012 was considered for a Grammy nomination! They serve to remind us of the old adage that says music & poetry can indeed be a soothing balm for troubled times.” — Lee Zimmerman\, No Depression\n\nThe Levins (pronounced LeVINNS)\, award-winning singer songwriters\, whose lyrically-rich acoustic music celebrates our common humanity\, reaching across cultural and religious borders\, and the beauty of caring for each other.  From harmony in voice to harmony for humanity\, Ira and Julia uplift and unite with unflinchingly feel-good infectious folk-pop\, and a unique approach to vocal harmonies that is both soulful and unexpected. Their music has garnered Top-10 airplay on Folk Radio and invitations to perform in Amsterdam\, England and throughout the United States\, including co-producing a full-scale musical theater production based on their earlier release\, My Friend Hafiz. DESCRIPTION:Jim Pospisil is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Hudson Valley whose songs are marked by well crafted\, sometimes quirky lyrics and themes from the personal to the profound. A mix of folk\, blues\, rock and more\, his performances on guitar\, mandolin\, flute and harmonica  can be soft and subtle\, or wild and energetic. He blends it all with a wry sense of humor\, his goal is to make you laugh\, cry\, or think. Sometimes all at once. He performs cover songs as well\, featuring fresh and creative arrangements. \nJim has just released his fourth album “Sleight Of Hand”\, his most varied and ambitious release to date. SUMMARY:Twilight Music in the Parks 2023 – Grampa Joe’s Washboard Band
DESCRIPTION:Grampa Joe’s Washboard Band was formed in 2017. The band is made up of Grampa Joe Cardella on vocals and washboard\, Vince Sauter on vocals and stand-up fretless bass\, and Wayne Chadwell on vocals and 6-string high-strung banjo. All three members have played in bands and as individuals since they were teenagers and all three play other instruments and have other musical interests as well.  \nThe style of music is difficult to describe so they simply call it “New Orleans style jazz\, blues\, string band\, jug band\, washboard band music”. DESCRIPTION:Pat Lamanna has been writing and performing songs all her adult life. Her songs have been praised highly by Pete Seeger\, Peter Yarrow\, and others. They have a strong folk influence\, and cover issues such as peace\, religion and the environment. \nPat was Sonny Ochs’ pick to perform in the Folk DJ Showcase at the 2012 conference of the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. One of her songs\, “Peace Pilgrim\,” is featured in part on Pete Seeger’s Grammy-nominated album\, “The Storm King.” She has three solo albums: “Full Circle” (2009); “Do I Know My Song Well Enough to Start Singing Yet?” (2012); and “Something Beautiful (2017). DESCRIPTION:Storm King Skyline:\nKevin & Carol Becker\, Rich Keyes\, Ken & Linda Sheehan \nStart with deep roots in traditional folk music\, add musical versatility\, mix in both historical and contemporary themes\, all seasoned with a healthy dose of good-natured humor\, then enjoy a performance by Storm King Skyline. \nA newly formed musical group\, Storm King Skyline has developed a unique sound that combines breathtaking vocals\, instrumental dexterity\, and a synergy that comes only from an intimate knowledge of each other’s talents.  That sound starts with Kevin’s intricate finger picked guitar\, augmented by his impeccable harmonica playing.  Carol’s soaring vocals – clear\, bright\, and pure\, stand out when singing solo and form compelling harmonies with Kevin and Ken’s baritone voices.  Ken adds the skillful touch of a virtuoso on guitar and the sound is all anchored by Rich’s solid rhythms on upright bass and his driving bluegrass-influenced banjo.  They feature Linda on tambourine and light percussion.  Carol adds other instruments as well\, notably mountain dulcimer\, recorder\, bodhran\, and Appalachian limber horse.  Their repertoire ranges from historical ballads to songs of social significance and from traditional folk songs to the original songs of the band members.  Storm King Skyline has an easy manner and relaxed stage presence which encourages audience participation and contributes to their entertaining performances. \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”. DESCRIPTION:Terri and Steve Massardo have spent time in various musical ensembles for almost 30 years\, including Yankee Rose\, The Tennessee Virgins\, What Four\, The Jesse Janes\, and The Broad Band\, and currently have the distinction of being the 4th and 5th members of a band called Trio Mio. \nThey made their local debut at the Hudson Valley Folk Guild in 1999. DESCRIPTION:The NYS Office of Parks has cancelled tonight’s performance due to inclement weather. \nInducted into the NY Blues Hall of Fame in 2014\, Elly Wininger is a 2023 International Blues Challenge Semifinalist.  A veteran of the Greenwich Village folk scene\, she played the opening night at CBGB.  Elly’s deep involvement with the country blues as well as her award-winning original songs have earned her a reputation for highly entertaining performances.  Her most recent album\, “The Blues Never End\,” (Earwig Music 2021) spent 12 weeks as the #1 Acoustic Blues Album on the Roots Music Report. \nElly is also a producer\, educator\, and host of the popular radio show Catskill Cabaradio.   Her public radio series “Rockin’  the Boat” exploring the role of music in political and social change was honored with an award from the United Nations Department of Information. \n  \n\nAbout Twilight Music in the Parks\nCome enjoy free live music from the Hudson Valley Folk Guild at the Walkway Over the Hudson this summer!\n\nOnce again\, The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will be providing the New York State Office of Parks with outdoor music on Thursday evenings for “Twilight Music in the Parks”.
