I’ve written over 150 original songs\, which I perform at venues in New York\, Connecticut\, Ohio\, and Tennessee. I’ve been lucky enough to earn recognition from American Songwriter Magazine and the Smoky Mountains Songwriting Festival for my songs. When I was 11\, I got to record an album of my music at The Tracking Room in Nashville\, Tennessee\, entitled Made You Look.  I’m a proud member of both SESAC and NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International).” \n“During the school year\, I get pretty busy – but I make time to share my music at farmers markets and other local events.  I’m the featured performer at Samuel’s Sweet Shop\, owned by actors Jeffrey Dean Morgan\, Hilarie Burton and Paul Rudd.  I won second place at Kara Dioguardi’s competition Tri-State Rocks\, and have continued to work with her organization\, Inspired Nation.  In Tennessee\, I love to sing at Antique Archaeology\, The Loveless Café\, The Station Inn\, and the Smoky Mountain Songwriters Festival. I’ve been able to share the stage with country\, bluegrass\, and folk music greats such as Bill Anderson\, Carl Jackson\, Larry Cordle\, Jerry Salley\, Bobby Tomberlin\, Don Henry\, and Tom Paxton. I play the guitar\, piano\, bell lyre\, ukulele\, banjolele\, mandolin\, charango\, and mountain dulcimer. DESCRIPTION:Janie has played guitar since she was in the 8th grade\, and wrote her first basic song at the age of 14.  She earned 13 credits in music at Western Connecticut  State University.  Janie has  also attended SummerSongs and Cedar Run songwriting camps\, as well as several singer/songwriter workshops. Her latest CD release is called\,  “I Love to See You Smile\,” a collection of family-oriented educational stories and songs that span the seasons. \nAn  advocate for special education\, Janie recorded an Autism awareness EP\, “In His Eyes / Living with Autism”. Born and raised in New York City\, he was influenced by the writers Bob Dylan\, Tom Waits\, and Springsteen\, who pushed him into the folk music song circles of the city. \nIn 2012 he won the prestigious New Folk Songwriters Contest at the Kerville Folk Festival in Texas. \nSachs still lives in NYC performing in various venues around the city. DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Don and Maureen Black in our monthly Open Mic on Saturday\, March 20\, 2021 at 7:30pm. \n\n\n\nDon and Maureen Black began taking guitar lessons with Helen Avakian in September of 2008. They first played together in public in January 2013 under the name “Never Too Late”. Since then they have played together in a variety of places\, most notably as the featured performers of the Poughkeepsie and Rock Tavern chapters of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\, in the “Teachers”-themed John Street Jam and in a Lou Reed tribute in Nyack.  They enjoy playing humorous songs and\, most especially\, songs written by local artists.  They were greatly honored to be asked to accompany friends such as Gregory Callahan and the late Patrick Daley and Frank Tetler. \n\nDon and Maureen currently host the Rock Tavern chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild as well as an open mic at the Hyde Park Library\, both of which are currently on Zoom.\n\n\n\n\nOpen Mic: \nOpen mic performances will be available to all. DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring Maggie Cacciola Rothwell in our monthly Open Mic on Saturday\, February 20\, 2021 at 7:30pm. \n\n\nSinger/songwriter and guitarist\, Maggie Rothwell\, is thrilled to be performing virtually for the Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild!\nMaggie was originally from Pleasantville\, NY in Westchester County but now lives in Red Hook\, NY in the Hudson Valley. She earned her Bachelor’s of Music Education degree with a concentration in voice from Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Maggie is a former elementary school music teacher who became a musician for therapeutic recreation departments in local nursing homes. \nShe’s grateful for the technology that allows her to continue to bring music to residents virtually during the pandemic. Maggie also runs a weekly open mic (now virtual) and\, before the pandemic\, enjoyed performing at various restaurants and farmers markets. \nWith a repertoire of over 900 cover songs and numerous originals\, Maggie has eclectic taste in music and enjoys performing a wide variety of styles. She’s happiest when she has a guitar in her hands and is singing songs that her audience can relate to and sing along with!\nMaggie is happily married with 2 grown children who are often the inspiration for her original songs. \n\n\n\nOpen Mic: \nOpen mic performances will be available to all. For being still in his twenties\, he has achieved experience beyond his years\, drawing from years accompanying such notable artists that include Eric Andersen\, Peter Rowan\, and The Kennedy’s. As a member of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival house band\, Eric has sat in with numerous acts and artists from around the country. \n\nHaving released his self-titled EP in 2015\, Eric recently finished production of his first full-length album\, Heartache Town. Exceptional performances compliment Lee’s compelling and honest vocal delivery\, as the graceful harmonies of renowned singer Tracy Grammer and the pristine mandolin of 5-time IBMA Mandolinist of the Year Jesse Brock (The Gibson Brothers) shine over the powerful and dynamic rhythm section comprised of seasoned talents Jim Henry (electric guitar)\, Paul Kochanski (bass)\, and J.J. DESCRIPTION:The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild is pleased to be featuring “This Is Us” in our monthly Open Mic on Saturday\, November 21\, 2020 at  7:30pm. \n“This is Us” features Carol and Kevin Becker w/ Rich Keyes & Ken Sheehan. \nStart with deep roots in traditional folk music\, add musical versatility\, mix in both historical and contemporary themes\, all seasoned with a healthy dose of good-natured humor\, then enjoy a performance by “THIS IS US”!\n\nA newly formed musical group\, THIS IS US has developed a unique sound that combines breathtaking vocals\, instrumental dexterity\, and a synergy that comes only from an intimate knowledge of each other’s talents.  That sound starts with Kevin’s intricate finger picked guitar\, augmented by his impeccable harmonica playing.  Carol’s soaring vocals\, clear\, bright\, and pure\, stand out when solo and form compelling harmonies with Kevin and Ken’s blending voices.  Ken adds the skillful touch of a virtuoso on guitar and it’s all anchored by Rich’s solid rhythms on upright bass and his driving bluegrass-influenced banjo.  They feature other instruments as well\, notably mountain dulcimer\, recorder\, bodhran\, Appalachian limber horse\, and various whistles. \nTheir repertoire ranges from historical ballads to songs of social significance\, from traditional folk songs to compositions by contemporary artists.  Original material and instrumentals add to the variety.  Their easy manner and relaxed stage presence encourages audience participation\, and contribute to their entertaining performances. \n\nOpen Mic: \nOpen mic performances will be available to all.
