SUMMARY:“Beyond A Simple Folk Song” Concert 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson Valley Folk Guild will presenting its annual “Beyond a Simple Folk Song” concert on Saturday\, July 19\, 2025\, 7:30pm\, at the Unitarian Universalist \, 67 S. Randolph Avenue\, Poughkeepsie\, N.Y. \nThis year we are excited to feature David Roth and Pat Wictor!   This will be the first time these well seasoned\, touring artists have collaborated on a show playing together!  This promises to be a great adventure in creativity as they develop genre-bending possibilities for each of their songs. These collaborations will most certainly be memorable and go well beyond the scope of a simple folk song! \n\nWe are also very pleased to present Pat Lamanna who will be dedicating her set to the memory of Lyn Burnstine.  Lyn was an accomplished and much-loved Hudson Valley folk singer and concert presenter. She was also a stalwart member of the Folk Guild. Pat will present many songs they have performed together\, as well as a couple of songs that Pat wrote about Lyn. \n\nTickets are $15\, general admission. For more information\, call 845-229-0170. \n\n  \n\n\n\n“Beyond a Simple Folk Song” was conceived in 2009 to be an annual concert of music that challenges the more experienced and advanced singer/songwriters and musicians to venture out of their comfort zones and stretch their craft beyond the typical constructs and scope of a song.  Some examples of how past performers have embraced the “Beyond” concept include “The Hudson River Folk Symphony” for chamber orchestra and folk group\, a set dedicated to the Piedmont Blues\, a “Folk” String Quartet\,  various narrated vignettes with accompanying songs\, various song cycles dedicated to particular subjects\, and an arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue” for solo guitar. \nDavid Roth strikes many chords\, hearts\, and minds with his unique songs\, offbeat observations\, moving stories\, sense of the hilarious\, and powerful singing and subject matter. As singer\, songwriter\, recording artist\, keynote speaker\, workshop leader\, and instructor\, David has earned top honors at premier songwriter competitions – Kerrville (TX) and Falcon Ridge (NY) – and taken his music\, experience\, and expertise to a wide variety of venues in this and other countries full-time for three decades. \nPat Wictor is a contemporary songwriter and interpreter drawing on the rural country\, gospel\, and blues traditions of our nation. Steeped in American “roots” music\, Pat first burst on the folk and acoustic scene as an innovative slide guitarist known for fresh and memorable interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs. He has since made his mark as a singer-songwriter penning lean and poetic songs that honor – and subvert – rural blues and gospel traditions. \nPat Lamanna has been writing and performing songs all her adult life. Her songs have a strong folk influence\, and cover issues such as peace\, religion and the environment.  One of her songs\, “Peace Pilgrim\,” is featured in part on Pete Seeger’s Grammy-nominated album\, “The Storm King.” She has three solo albums: “Full Circle”\, “Do I Know My Song Well Enough to Start Singing Yet?”\, and “Something Beautiful”. Pat was the 2019 winner of the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. \n\n\n

A regional performer for many years\, Linda will be joined for part of her set by her frequent singing partner\, Linda Bresnahan McCarthy. Together they are known for their tight intricate harmonies and will delight with some holiday favors. \n  \n  \n  \n\nJim Pospisil\n \nJim Pospisil\nJim Pospisil is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Hudson Valley whose songs are marked by well crafted\, sometimes quirky lyrics and themes from the personal to the profound. A mix of folk\, blues\, rock and more\, his performances on guitar\, mandolin\, flute and harmonica can be soft and subtle\, or wild and energetic. He blends it all with a wry sense of humor\, his goal is to make you laugh\, cry\, or think. Sometimes all at once. He performs cover songs as well\, featuring fresh and creative arrangements. Jim has just released his fourth album “Sleight Of Hand”\, his most varied and ambitious release to date. The songs examine the trials of love\, life and loss\, and the challenge to rise above it all.\n \n  \n  \n  \n\nIndigo\n \nIndigo\nIndigo is a trio featuring Terri Massardo on vocals\, Bob Bottjer on guitar\, and Steve Massardo on bass. They perform vintage blues and jazz standards.\nTerri and Steve Massardo have spent time in various musical ensembles for almost 30 years\, including Yankee Rose\, The Tennessee Virgins\, What Four\, The Jesse Janes\, and The Broad Band\, and currently have the distinction of being the 4th and 5th members of a band called Trio Mio. They made their local debut at the Hudson Valley Folk Guild in 1999. They have produced many concert events throughout the region since 2004\, and have done exhaustive research on live music throughout some of the Hudson Valley’s best bars and restaurants.\nBob Bottjer has never met a musical genre that he can’t play\, and his virtuosity on guitar and steel have got him in high demand around the region. His tasteful\, unobtrusive licks make everything sound better. \n  \n\nKurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert \nKurt Henry & Cheryl Lambert\nKurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert\, a dynamic guitar/harmonica duo\, always surprise and delight people with the diversity of their repertoire\, both covers and originals. Kurt’s popularity as a guitarist is due in part to the range of styles he displays\, while the duet taken as a whole–guitar\, harmonica\, percussion and harmony vocals–seems like more than two busy musicians\, making for a compelling performance. \n\nPat Lamanna\n \nPat Lamanna\nPat Lamanna has been writing and performing songs all her adult life. Her songs have been praised highly by Pete Seeger\, Peter Yarrow\, and others. They have a strong folk influence\, and cover issues such as peace\, religion and the environment. Pat was Sonny Ochs’ pick to perform in the Folk DJ Showcase at the 2012 conference of the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. One of her songs\, “Peace Pilgrim\,” is featured in part on Pete Seeger’s Grammy-nominated album\, “The Storm King.” She has three solo albums: “Full Circle” (2009); “Do I Know My Song Well Enough to Start Singing Yet?” (2012); and “Something Beautiful (2017). She is a 2019 winner of the South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. \n\nDeb Martin\n \nDeb Martin\nAn expressive\, euphonic voice\, a steady guitar\, a mood\, and perhaps a memory. Deb Martin plays originals and covers with soulful\, rich\, and sometimes even playful vocals. Her originals focus on women’s stories\, family\, politics and love. An entertainer at heart\, she performs a variety of covers “her way” as she interacts with her audiences. You can find her at local venues and fairs as a solo act\, and as a part of the trio\, MartinTullyKlein. \n\nDon and Maureen Black\n \nDon and Maureen Black\nDon and Maureen Black began taking guitar lessons with Helen Avakian in September of 2008. They first played together in public in January 2013 under the name “Never Too Late”. Since then they have played together in a variety of local venues\, most notably in the “Teachers”-themed John Street Jam\, and in a Lou Reed tribute in Nyack. They play regularly at the Hudson Valley Folk Guild\, the Hyde Park Library\, the High Falls Café\, and at Richard’s Rhinecliff Acoustic Show at Morton Library. They enjoy playing humorous songs and\, most especially\, songs written by local artists. \n\nJohn Schin\n \nJohn Schin\nJohn Schin is a singer songwriter from Pawling New York. He has been performing original songs and eclectic covers at open mics throughout the Hudson valley. His songs tell stories. Some make you laugh\, some hit your heart\, some make you think. \n\nJames Leo\n \nJames Leo\nJames Leo\, a native of Bensonhurst\, Brooklyn\, experienced a life-changing moment in 1970 when he encountered the music of Sam “Lightin” Hopkins. Inspired by the mastery and emotive power of Hopkins’ blues\, James decided to learn to play the guitar\, attempting to echo the unique sounds and feelings produced by the acclaimed bluesman.\nAs he embarked on his musical journey\, James expanded his influences to include Robert Johnson and Django Reinhardt\, the latter known for his contributions to gypsy jazz. Further enhancing his skills\, he had the opportunity to study under the guidance of the late Danny Kalb and Frank Christian\, both prominent figures in the Greenwich Village music scene. He is currently studying with Mike Dowling and will forever be a “student of the guitar.” \n\nAndy Shapiro \nAndy Shapiro\nAndy has performed in a variety of bands since 1968 including blues\, soul\, country\, rock\, and original music. For the last 5 years he has been focusing on writing songs and performing as a singer songwriter in the Hudson Valley and has released his first cd: “Find My Way Home” which received Honorable Mention in the 14th Annual emPower Posi Music Awards. He is now working on his second cd with songs of struggle and hope.

SUMMARY:“Beyond A Simple Folk Song” Concert 2024
DESCRIPTION:“Beyond a Simple Folk Song” was conceived in 2009 to be an annual concert of music that challenges acoustic singer/songwriters and musicians to venture out of their comfort zones and stretch their craft beyond the constructs and scope of a song. \nFor this year’s concert\, join us for our headline act with the Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo\, comprised of the Country Blues duo Valerie and Benedict Turner. Our opening act features Kurt Henry & Cheryl Lambert\, followed by a chamber piece composed by Kevin Becker and performed by Melissa Holland and Linda Bresnahan. Our MC for the afternoon is Steve Allen. \nThe Stissing Center\,\nJuly 28\, 2024\, 2pm-4pm\n2950 Church St\, Pine Plains\, NY 12567\nGeneral admission tickets are available on line at the website – www.thestissingcenter.org\n$20 in advance\, $25 at the door. \n\nPiedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo\nThe Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo\, comprised of Valerie and Benedict Turner\, are ambassadors of Country Blues music and the Piedmont style of fingerpicking. Their mission is to help bring awareness to this unique aspect of African-American culture\, and to the contributions of early blues artists\, through performing and teaching. \nThey have been entertaining audiences both domestically and abroad and are much loved wherever they go. As 2018 inductees into the New York Blues Hall of Fame\, this husband-and-wife duo feel that “there are stories to tell\, people to remember\, and things that must be said” so\, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music\, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song. \nA Piedmont Blūz concert isn’t just music – it’s an experience as they transport you back to the 1920s and 1930s\, the hey-day of acoustic Country Blues music. In addition to performing songs from that time-frame\, they introduce each piece with an interesting anecdote about either the composer\, the time period\, or the song itself.\n \n\nHVFG Opening Acts:\nKurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert\nKurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert\, a dynamic guitar/harmonica duo\, always surprise and delight people with the diversity of their repertoire\, both covers and originals. Kurt’s popularity as a guitarist is due in part to the range of styles he displays\, while the duet taken as a whole–guitar\, harmonica\, percussion and harmony vocals–seems like more than two busy musicians\, making for a compelling performance.\nPlanned set list: \n“Driving Wheel” by David Wiffen: In 1967 I bought my first high end flattop guitar and met Stephen J. Altman\, called “Pete\,” who managed Israel G. Young’s The Folklore Center\, which was New York City’s Mecca for folk music and expert repair by Ed Diehl. Pete taught me fingerpicking and different tunings. \n“Shadowbride”: Pete also introduced me to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. He wrote the melody to Tolkien’s poem of the same name. He taught me travis picking and gave me fingerpicks that I mostly lost or stepped on. This has been a real aid to me in getting a softer finger pick style. All that follow “Shadowbride” are original. \n“The Hammer and the Cross”: In 1971 I discovered William Morris\, considered by many to be a 19th C. renaissance man. I became a life member of the William Morris Society and began amassing a library devoted to that great man. Morris\, among other things\, created the fantasy novel. “The Hammer and the Cross” is a song about medieval genocide.  It uses the symbols of oak and pine to represent the suffering of old (oak) and young (pine). \n“The Grain in the Whiskey”: Here is a simple folksong about love and loss—just because. (Maybe I’ll dedicate it to Ian and Sylvia\, who exemplified urban folk music.) \n“On a Summertide” is an homage for the Byrds for whom I opened for the first time in 1969 or 1970. This was the roster that featured country-rock guitarist\, Clarence White\, who swept me away! Clarence exemplified using guitar amps to bring modern\, grittier guitar tones to country music. Wow! It’s also an homage to the sixties\, a time I am glad to have experienced with its unique music. \nThe Julia songs: The Julia songs (“Julia in Running Shoes”  “Julia the Compleat Angler” (sic.)) are beyond a simple song in their playfulness around the subject of—dare I say it—S-E-X!\, all well enough disguised. \n“Over the Mountain” is a short suite that shows many of the techniques both Cheryl and I have worked on separately and together. Cheryl has grown immensely as a harmonica player. We both play harmonicas and enjoy working out harmonica parts (and vocal harmonies) together. During the covid epidemic we—together—used Facebook to bring live music to people’s living rooms in safety. We donated CD sales to our local food pantry. We still perform our Nine Mile Swamp shows to people all over the country and around the globe. \n———————————————— \n“Folk Themes and Variations”\nComposed by Kevin F. Becker\nKevin Becker has composed a chamber piece entitled\, “Folk Themes and Variations”\, which is a unique blending of folk and classical music. Playing the piece will be two very fine musicians: Melissa Holland on flute\, accompanied by Linda Bresnahan on piano. \nA three movement piece for flute and piano that is based on the folk songs “Yankee Doodle” and “Shenandoah.”  There is also a modern technique\, an atonal tone row\, that gets integrated in each of the movements periodically throughout the piece. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n     \n\n\n\n1st movement – classic theme & variations with snippets of “Yankee Doodle” and instances of the 12-tone row integrated within a tonal base.\n2nd Movement – a theme and variations based on the folk song\, “Shenandoah”\n\nVariation 1 – Counterpoint melody to “Shenandoah”\nVariation 2 – Melodic & harmonic changes\nVariation 3 – Minor\, representing the difficulties inherent in a mixed marriage of the day (w a brief appearance of the tone row to prepare for the final variation)\nVariation 4 – “Grande”\n\n\n3rd movement – Rondo\n\n    A – Main theme is the first 8 notes of the 12-tone row but completed as a tonal tune\n    B – “Yankee Doodle” in Minor mode\n    A – Main theme\n    C – “Shenandoah” tune in the flute with a ragtime piano accompaniment\n    A – Main theme\, that ends with material from the 1st movement.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Stissing Center\nThis year marks the second year the venue for our concert is The Stissing Center. In rural and historic Pine Plains\, it is easily reachable via main routes (Taconic State Parkway\, 44\, 82\, 199)\, making it an ideal destination for a scenic Sunday afternoon drive. Located in a brick building dating back to 1915\, The Stissing Center features a main concert hall that is a beautiful\, rustic-chic performance space with a glass entryway. The Center is air conditioned and ADA-accessible. \nPlease note that the parking lot is closed this year\, but on the street parking is free\, plentiful\, and convenient.  In addition\, there will be a “drop off” area directly in front of the entrance to the theater for those who need it.  There will also be two volunteers to assist with parking and pointing people to the municipal parking area directly behind the Millbrook Bank at the corner of Rte 199 and Rte 82.. \nhttps://www.thestissingcenter.org/
